I've had reoccurring problems with
svchost for many years with Win 7, always went round and round with

But when I got to Windows Update and stopped it, my CPU usage dropped to almost nothing. I wondered many times why so many svchost.exe would be running even though I did not open any windows. Followed your solution 3 and 4 which have seemed to solve this pesky problem. I hope it won`t have any negative affects!

October 27, 2008 BILL Kaspersky gave me this: Running process C:\windows\system32\svchost.exe: detected modification of riskware ‘Mass-mailer software'. So, another solution is to clear Event Viewer's log. I tried doing the cmd prompt with Tasklist/svc but it didn't work. Thanks a lot!

If you just stop it it will will get automagically resurrected.
