Check out the Process Explorer tool from Microsoft (originally from SysInternals). You will want to be offline when you do this. Explorer.exe using too much CPU. If you Start/Run/"msconfig" and then go to Startup on that screen you can find a list of programs that are running- background or foreground- every time you start Windows.
