It was necessary to disable the service while in Safe Mode. Then I renamed C:\windows\SoftwareDistribution and the issue is gone. In run command box, type: services.msc and press Enter. 3. I have limited access to this laptop and, when I did, well it ran so slowly because svchost keeps grabbing all the memory!
What gets me is that this instance of NPS is a duplicate of another instance, both running on VMWare, both from the same inital image. Is it normal when only opera browser is running to spend 2500 MB of RAM? The memory counts don't match up at all and I just don't see any way to know what is causing me problems. In some cases the svchost.exe high CPU (or high Memory) usage problem has to do with the large log files in Windows event viewer.
I also add to the suggestion that you grab a copy of process explorer and check all of the hoggish services / programs and get them down to a minimum amount. Sign in to report inappropriate content. Scan your computer for viruses. I have all updates to XP installed (Aug 2011) The volume of comments and suggested fixes indicate that MS haven't been able to really solve the problem.
