Thanks to WHS and ScottW -- I now have (rather my son now has) a working laptop again. If you have a big hard drive in your PC, however, it won't be a big deal. I am not particularly super techie, so diabling the network card in the BIOS I hope is something I can do without breaking anything more important. You may have to use an earlier restore point (especially if you’ve tried the more recent ones without success), but if that doesn’t work, you may need to switch System Restore
