Actually Microsoft has released a few updates for the Windows Update client program. Click on 'Install updates'. Got to 100% then said there was an issue....then reported up-to-date. I think I will go with that suggestion, I appreciate the advice.

been to a ton of other web pages including microsoft solutions and this (Solution 1) was the only one that worked - following clean re-install of Windows 7. Restart as the manual updates require. Finally... Updates are downloading now, with progress percentage.
THANK YOU! I work on computers on a regular basis. Problem is that the so called older gentlman is, as i said before, not tech savvy, and has a brother printer... Caution: it is mentioned that Windows Update should be turned off or disabled before downloading these patches.
