Svchost Problem After XP Re-install
If I start an update for my Windows7, the message "Es wird nach Updates gesucht" pops up and stays "endless". Sometimes even trying to click the file in Explorer would cause an error and Windows to say it didn't want to play the file. The first thing I did was disable Windows automatic updates, which freed my CPU from the dreaded svchost.exe lock up. I think this did the job. What else is odd is I can't shut down my PC unless I end hpqtra.exe. I had the same problem with Genuine Windows Update KB905474 freezing and using 100% CPU. If you do all the garbage listed here, for sure SVCHOST will not bother you anymore :) Your PC will be dead until format and reinstall.

- I may not know how to fix the problem myself, but I know enough to know that blindly installing .bat files (or even the .exe's) can be very dangerous.
Now it is filled with 5.25GB of data in 69,886 files and 3822 folder after about 1 hour of downloads. Confirmed on two types of systems: Old install of Windows XP Professional SP3 (manufacturer recovery CD) on a Intel PC, having Internet Explorer 6 for legacy software comparability. Which is probably true as my system is in German. It was svchost.exe -k netsvcs being the heavy user. (Another was listed but not using the CPU like the first one.) I went back into safe mode and went into msconfig where i unchecked most of the services.

should I try this fix first. All this has stopped for me and i have a Windows XP service pack 1 purchased in Feb 2012. I am able to use my computer again. I have installed IE8. svchost ate up CPU again, but only for a minute, and then Windows Update showed about 150 updates I'm missing. It installed fine and after that, Windows Update detected, downloaded and installed remaining updates without any CPU hog.
